Goldendoodle dog breed profile

This low-shed breed is begging to join your playful family.

Goldendoodles are a mix of two moderately active dog breeds that value affection — golden retrievers and poodles. If a goldendoodle is already part of your pack, their outgoing personalities toward friends of all kinds might not come as a surprise, but the rest of these facts just might.

What is the typical goldendoodle temperament?

It’s no secret that goldendoodles are a joy to have around. They’re generally described as intelligent, active, loyal, loving, gentle, social, playful and outgoing. This breed is ideal for families with children and other pets. And like all pups, socialization at a young age will help them thrive throughout their lives.

“Goldendoodles can live in a house, apartment or high-rise as long as they get exercise,” Dr. Laura Robinson, DVM, a vet at Antonio Animal Hospital, said. “They’re great for active people and families. They love to run, hike, play, fetch and many even like to swim.”

Are goldendoodles smart?

These pups are generally very intelligent and easy to train compared to other dog breeds, as they tend to pick up commands quickly.

Are goldendoodles hypoallergenic?

While there’s no true hypoallergenic dog breed, goldendoodles can be a good option for those with allergies due to their poodle heritage. However, there’s no guarantee that a mixed breed will maintain the low-shed fur.

“Every dog gives off some dander,” Dr. Robinson said. “However, goldendoodles tend to be one of the best breeds for people with allergies because they have little to no shedding.”

Because of this low shedding, Dr. Robinson added that goldendoodles require more haircuts than other breeds — about every 6 to 8 weeks.

How big is a full-grown goldendoodle?

The outgoing personality of goldendoodles typically have three fun-loving sizes: miniature goldendoodles, small goldendoodles and large goldendoodles.

Mini doodles stand about 13 to 20 inches in height and weigh between 15 to 30 pounds fully-grown.

“Miniature poodles tend to be less active and have lower exercise needs than standard poodles,” Dr. Robinson said. For this reason, she says to consider a mini goldendoodle if you have a less active lifestyle.

Small goldendoodles stand about 17 to 20 inches in height and weigh between 40 to 50 pounds fully-grown. The largest of the goldendoodles stands about 20 to 24 inches in height and can weigh between 50 to 90 pounds fully grown.

Common health conditions that affect goldendoodles

The lifespan of a goldendoodle is around 10 to 12 years. During their lives, goldendoodles are susceptible to several health conditions. Talk to your veterinarian about how to prevent the following possible health issues from affecting your best friend:

“To ensure they live a full and healthy life, make an appointment with your veterinarian soon after adopting your pup,” Dr. Robinson recommended.
