Can dogs drink seltzer?

When you're reaching for a refreshing can of seltzer water, you might be tempted to share a little with your dog. After all, seltzer is just water with bubbles, right? While a small sip of plain seltzer probably won't send you rushing to the emergency vet, there's really no benefit to giving it to your dog — and plenty of potential downsides that make it worth avoiding.

Is seltzer water safe for dogs?

Plain seltzer water isn't toxic to dogs, but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to pour some in their bowl. The carbonation that makes your drink refreshing can cause uncomfortable digestive issues for your pup. "The bubbles in carbonated water can lead to gas and stomach discomfort in dogs," Dr. Aliya McCullough, Fetch’s Chief Veterinary Officer, explains. "Stick to offering them fresh water in a clean bowl."

Why flavored seltzers may contain dangerous ingredients to dogs

Many flavored seltzers contain artificial sweeteners, and one in particular — xylitol — is extremely toxic to dogs. Even tiny amounts of xylitol can cause rapid blood sugar drops, seizures, liver failure and death in dogs.

Other artificial sweeteners and flavorings might not be as immediately dangerous as xylitol, but they can still cause digestive upset or other health issues. Since product formulations change frequently and ingredient lists can be hard to decipher, it's safest to keep all flavored seltzers away from your dog entirely.

What happens if your dog drinks seltzer?

If your dog sneaks a few laps of plain seltzer water, don't panic. Watch for signs of digestive discomfort like excessive burping, gas, restlessness or a bloated appearance. Most dogs will simply pass the gas and feel better within a few hours.

For dogs who've consumed flavored seltzer, especially if it contains xylitol or unknown sweeteners, call your vet or pet poison helpline right away. Time is critical when dealing with potential xylitol poisoning.

The best drink for your dog (spoiler: it's not seltzer)

When it comes to keeping your dog hydrated, nothing beats good old-fashioned water. Fresh, clean water provides everything your dog needs to stay healthy and hydrated without any of the risks that come with carbonated beverages. If you're worried your dog isn't drinking enough water, make sure their water bowl is clean and easy to access. Try adding ice cubes to their bowl, investing in a pet water fountain or flavoring their water with a small amount of low-sodium chicken broth.

Some pet parents wonder if their dogs might enjoy the novelty of bubbles, but dogs don't experience carbonation the same way we do. What seems refreshing to us often just causes confusion and discomfort for them. Save the seltzer for yourself and stick to what works best for your pup.
